Toxin Is Accelerating Demise of Fossil Fish
A chemical applied to ship hulls is robbing Chinese sturgeon of their eyes and causing other deformities, according to a new study. The toxin may deal a death blow to the already-endangered fish, a living fossil that the Chinese government considers a “national treasure.” (more…)

New rainforest reserve to protect more than 1,000 bonobos and benefit local communities
A new reserve, aimed at conserving the endangered Bonobo, has been created in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve is a community-managed protected area which harbours one of the largest known wild populations of the endangered bonobo. The Kokolopori Bonobo Reserve is the pilot and model site for the Bonobo Peace Forest, a proposed constellation of community-based nature reserves supported by sustainable development. (more…)

Tasmanian devils listed as endangered
The Tasmanian devil, a snarling fox-sized marsupial made notorious by its Looney Tunes cartoon namesake Taz, was listed in Australia as an endangered species today because of a contagious cancer that has wiped out most of the wild population. (more…)

UK Ospreys 2009 – First chicks have hatched
Ospreys are iconic birds in the UK. Once widespread, ospreys became extinct in herein 1916, until in 1954 a pair nested at Loch Garten in Scotland. Every year ospreys make the 3000 mile flight from their wintering grounds in Glaslyn ospreysWest Africa, arriving back in the UK for the spring mating season, before disappearing south again in the late summer once their chicks have fledged. 200 pairs of osprey now breed in Scotland during the summer months, and ospreys are now breeding again in England and Wales.
